Enjoy a Restored Quality of Life

Research indicates temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction impacts an estimated 10–15% of adults and affects women two to four times more frequently than men. Located on each side of the head in front of your ears, the TMJs act as hinges that connect your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. They work together when you chew, speak, and swallow and control your lower jaw as it moves forward, backward, and side to side.

If you’re suffering from chronic jaw pain, a locked jaw, difficulty chewing, headaches, or tooth clenching/grinding (bruxism), these could be signs of a TMJ disorder. At Smile Dental Centre, we offer state-of-the-art TMJ treatment in Hagerstown, MD to alleviate pain and restore your quality of life! One-on-one consultations and thorough head and neck evaluations will help Dr. Taimour Raja determine the most optimal TMJ method to provide relief for your symptoms.

What You Should Know
About TMJ Disorder

While trauma, malocclusion, and psychological factors play a role in TMJ dysfunction, studies suggest they exacerbate the condition rather than cause it. Experts believe certain patients who are vulnerable to TMJ disorders develop pain and functional issues following acute physical or psychological trauma. Myofascial pain involving discomfort or pain in the muscles that control jaw function comprises 80% of cases. The remaining cases are attributed to internal derangement of the joint due to a displaced disc, dislocated jaw, or injury to the condyles (the rounded ends of the lower jaw that fit up into the jaw joints). Some patients with degenerative or inflammatory joint diseases (e.g., osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis) also suffer from this debilitating condition.
